United Kingdom · 1 days
The Kaizen Mountain Hybrid Race is a single continuous loop that moves you through four stations before a finishing sprint. You start on a Concept2 rower for 2km, then move to a bike erg for 5km, then head out onto a 5km trail run with roughly 270m of elevation gain, then come back to a 2km ski erg before finishing with 50 sandbag over-shoulder reps (50kg for men, 30kg for women). There's a one-minute penalty for any incomplete sandbag rep. The race finishes with a 25-metre sprint over the line.
Transitions are part of the race. If it's wet, you'll need to change from gym shoes to trail shoes between the erg zone and the run, and that shoe change is timed. The trail itself is a mix of concrete, gravel, loose stones and rocky path, so you'll likely walk parts of it. The organiser recommends trail shoes but allows road shoes if you prefer. All ergs are Concept2 and the sandbags are CompeteForce strongman bags.
Waves run every 20 minutes from 9am, with two athletes starting side by side. You'll be told your wave the week before the event, and you should arrive an hour before your start time. The whole day wraps up by 3:30pm, with winners announced once the final wave finishes. There's a covered athlete and spectator zone, professional photos, and a recovery zone with muscle guns, foam rollers, and stretch bands. Food is available from a BBQ all day, and there are free samples from TENZING, Vivo Life, and others.
What sets this apart from other hybrid races is the setting and the format. It's not a stadium event; it's on a working farm campsite in the heart of the Lake District, with a natural river next to the course for post-race recovery. The field is capped at 32, so it feels more like a serious club competition than a mass-participation event. The prize purse includes cash for a sub-60-minute finish, plus gear from Gym King, Supbox, and others.
The race is organised by Camp Kaizen, who also run training at the site. They've partnered with local businesses like Beyond Fitness Keswick, Northern Warrior Fitness, and Fellside Sauna. The event is sponsored by TENZING, Jubel, Voom Nutrition, Last Rep Coffee, Vivo Life, and FORME Recovery. It's a well-supported race with a strong community feel.
If you're looking for a hybrid race that's genuinely testing and set in a stunning location, this is it. The combination of ergs, trail, and strength endurance is unusual, and the head-to-head wave start adds a competitive edge. It's a one-day event, but you can stay overnight in a glamping bell tent on site, which turns it into a full weekend.
