Home › Retreats › Kamalaya Wellness Sanctuary: A Holistic Health Retreat in Koh Samui
Koh Samui · 7 days · From USD 3500
Kamalaya sits on a hillside overlooking the Gulf of Thailand, about 20 minutes from Samui International Airport. The property is built around a monk's cave, which remains a meditation spot, and spreads across gardens filled with lotus ponds and tropical plants. There are two restaurants: Amrita, near the beachfront pool, and Alchemy Tea Lounge, which serves herbal infusions, smoothies, and elixirs. The retreat has a yoga pavilion, a steam cavern, a swimming pool, and a fitness centre.
The wellness programs are the core of the experience. You start with a consultation to determine which program suits you—options might focus on detox, stress reduction, fitness, or emotional balance. The team includes naturopaths, TCM practitioners, yoga teachers, fitness trainers, massage therapists, and life enhancement mentors. Treatments draw on both Eastern and Western modalities, and the Longevity House adds advanced therapies like IV drips and hyperbaric oxygen.
What sets Kamalaya apart is the depth of its practitioners and the integration of medical diagnostics with holistic care. You can get functional health assessments and preventive screenings, then work with practitioners to address any imbalances. The retreat also runs online workshops and a podcast hosted by founder Karina Stewart, who is involved in the day-to-day. The overall vibe is professional but warm, with a focus on long-term health rather than quick fixes.
Accommodation ranges from hillside rooms with garden or sea views to villas with private pools. All rooms are designed to feel part of the landscape, with natural materials and outdoor spaces. The Beachfront Villa, perched on granite boulders, has a balcony overlooking the private beach. The Penthouse Pool Suite can have one or two bedrooms, and the Beachfront Pool Villa is similar. Rooms have air conditioning, complimentary WiFi (in rooms and the library), and amenities like tea-making facilities.
Food is mostly plant-based, with fish and seafood options. The menu changes daily and uses local, organic ingredients where possible. Dishes might include green papaya salad, steamed fish with lemongrass, and herbal teas. Special diets—vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free—are catered for if you notify them in advance. Alcohol is available but not a focus; the emphasis is on detox and clean eating.
The retreat is suitable for adults of all ages and fitness levels, though some programs are more physically demanding. It's popular with solo travellers, couples, and friends. The digital detox policy means it's not ideal for those who need to stay connected constantly, but WiFi is available in rooms. The minimum stay is typically three nights, but programs often run for 7, 10, or 14 nights.
