Home › Retreats › Learn to Surf at a Sustainable Beach Camp in Uluwatu, Bali
Indonesia · 7 days · From EUR 700
Uluwatu is on the southern tip of Bali, where the limestone cliffs drop into the Indian Ocean and the waves are consistent enough to learn on but challenging enough to keep you coming back. The camp sits close to several breaks — some mellow, some not — so your instructor can pick the right one for the day's conditions and your level. Lessons are run by local Balinese surfers like Kadek and Made who grew up on these waves and know exactly where a beginner should be sitting.
A typical day starts early, because that's when the wind is offshore and the water is cleanest. You'll meet your group, get a board, and head to the beach. Lessons run for about two hours, with feedback on the sand and in the water. After that, breakfast is waiting back at camp — fresh fruit, eggs, pancakes, coffee. The afternoon is free. Some people take a second surf, others sign up for a yoga class, and plenty just lie by the pool. There's a restaurant on-site that serves a mix of Indonesian and Western dishes, and it's good enough that guests mention it in reviews.
The accommodation is simple but well done. Rooms have fans or A/C, Wi-Fi, and either a garden or ocean view depending on which one you book. The glamping area is a step up in atmosphere — canvas tents with real beds and shared bathrooms, set among the trees. The whole place is run on a sustainable model: solar where possible, local materials, no single-use plastic in the restaurant. It's the kind of place where you can show up solo and leave with a group chat full of people you'll meet again.
What sets this camp apart from the dozens of other surf camps in Bali is the location and the staff. Uluwatu is less crowded than Canggu or Kuta, and the camp has been running long enough to have a real community feel. The instructors are patient with beginners and push advanced surfers, and the management is responsive if something's not right. It's not a party camp — people are here to surf, and the vibe reflects that.
