Learn to Surf in Okinawa: Beachfront Stay & Beginner Coaching

Japan · 7 days

Okinawa's reefs shift with wind and tide constantly, which is why the school has built its whole operation around a daily wave check. On a good day you're surfing the beach directly in front of the guesthouse. On a windy or flat day, the instructors load up and drive — sometimes 40 minutes, sometimes two hours north to the Yanbaru breaks — to find something rideable. You're not surfing the same spot every session, and the coaching adjusts to wherever you end up.

The lead instructor, Danny Melhado, is a former ASP/WSL World Tour surfer, a US National Surf Team member, and an inductee into the East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame. He founded the school in 2009. That competitive background isn't used to push advanced surfing on guests — the school's focus is explicitly beginners, early learners and families, with longboard-friendly conditions and warm subtropical water that make learning genuinely comfortable.

Groups are kept small enough for real in-water coaching, and children are welcomed. When you book you're asked for your kids' ages and swimming experience so the instructors can prep appropriate gear and assign dedicated coaching support. Non-surfers and family members can be accommodated at the sister guesthouse next door, so you can bring people who'd rather sit on the beach than paddle out.

Equipment is included and sized to you: premium surfboards, wetsuits or rashguards, and reef booties for every lesson at no extra cost. The reef coaching is a real part of the syllabus — how to read a coral reef break, get in and out safely, and not damage the ecosystem in the process. It's a detail that matters in Okinawa, where a lot of the coast is reef rather than sand-bottom.

Reviews on Google Maps sit at 4.9 stars across more than 100 reviews, and the recurring comments are about instruction quality, the relaxed feel of the house, and the instructors' local knowledge of where to go and when.
