Home › Retreats › Learn to Surf on France's Atlantic Coast: Small-Group Hossegor Surf Camp
France · 7 days · From EUR 615
A typical day starts with breakfast at the camp, then you check the surf report and head out with your instructor group to whichever beach is working that day — often La Centrale if the banks are clean, or La Sud when the swell is bigger. Lessons run for around two hours and cover warm-up, paddling technique, pop-up drills on the sand and then time in the water with a coach watching each person. Five lessons are included across the week, usually one per day with a rest day built in depending on conditions.
Afternoons are free. Most people surf again on their own boards, walk into Hossegor town for a coffee, or lie on the beach. The camp sits close enough to the shoreline that you can be in the water within a few minutes of leaving your room. In the evening, dinner is either cooked in the shared kitchen or eaten out in town, and there's a beer garden on site that fills up most nights, plus barbecue evenings and the daily happy hour at the bar.
The accommodation is a hostel-style surf house with shared rooms. The six-person dorm is the standard option at €615 for seven nights. Bedding is provided, bathrooms are shared, and there's a communal kitchen area with a worktop, two mini-fridges and a microwave. It is not a luxury property — the point here is proximity to the waves, a low price and a crowd of people to surf with.
What separates this camp from other surf stays in the region is the location. Hossegor is where the Quiksilver Pro France used to run, and the beach breaks on this stretch of coast are powerful and consistent in a way that most European beginner spots aren't. That means you get genuinely good waves to learn on, real conditions to read, and coaches who have grown up surfing them. The camp is also set up to take a lot of people, so it's easy to join on your own and find a group to paddle out with.
Instructors are qualified through their national surfing federation and teach a progressive method: reading the ocean and safety first, then board control, then standing up. The stated aim is that by the end of the week you can paddle out, choose a wave and ride it without help. Lessons run in English, and the camp is open from spring through to the end of October, when the summer swells give way to the bigger autumn waves.
