Home › Retreats › Madeira Wellness Week: Yoga, Hiking and Coastal Fitness
Portugal · 7 days
The week is built around two things: daily yoga and getting out onto Madeira's trails. Mornings typically begin with a yoga session before breakfast, then the group heads out for a hike or an excursion. Madeira's levadas — the old irrigation channels that cut across the island — make for flat, shaded walks through laurel forest, while the coastal paths and the peaks around Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo are steeper and more exposed. The schedule picks routes to suit the group.
Afternoons and evenings leave space for the pool, the spa, or a walk into town. Funchal, the capital, is on the south coast and has the Mercado dos Lavradores, the old town, and the cable car up to Monte. The retreat also uses the island's food and wine: Madeira wine, bolo do caco flatbread, fresh fish like espada, and the tropical fruit that grows on the island's terraced slopes.
The property is a five-star hotel, so the comfort level is high — proper beds, a pool, a spa, and a restaurant on site. This is not a hostel-style retreat. It suits people who want to train and walk during the day and sleep well at night.
What separates this from a generic yoga holiday is the walking. Madeira is a hikers' island, and the retreat leans into that: the levada walks, the coastal trails, the mountain viewpoints. The yoga supports the walking rather than the other way round.
Group size is kept small so the guide can adjust routes and pace. The retreat is also available as a private booking for groups — reunions, corporate team-building, or a special occasion — with the location, itinerary and theme chosen by the group.
