Maldives Surf Coaching Trip: Empty Lineups, Video Analysis & Boat Life

Maldives · 7 days

Renegade Surf Travel runs scheduled surf coaching trips in the Maldives on a charter boat, open to solo travellers, couples and small groups. The trips are built for competent, independent surfers — people who can paddle out, catch their own waves and want to improve, not beginners learning to stand up. The boat chases the best conditions across the atolls, so the exact spots you surf depend on the swell and wind that week. In practice that means reef breaks with clean, uncrowded waves, and at least one session most days where it's just your group in the water.

The daily rhythm is roughly: early surf, breakfast, video review, second surf, lunch, rest, third surf in the afternoon, surf theory or more video before dinner. Some days include extras — snorkelling, a visit to a local island, an uninhabited island stop — depending on conditions and what the group wants. Coaches give individual feedback throughout, and at the end you get your photos, videos and personalised coaching notes to take home.

Anything about the coaching that separates it from other surf trips: it's structured. Video is shot most sessions, reviewed the same day, and the feedback builds on itself across the week. Guests specifically mention that coaches identify things that stick — one reviewer said they came home surfing noticeably better, which they said rarely happens on surf trips. Another wrote about finally having things click from a previous trip on their second visit.

The boats themselves — Assidha, Theia and Kefi — differ in size and comfort level. Assidha is the middle option with A/C, good for mid-sized groups. Theia is the larger, higher-spec boat with a high-speed dinghy. Kefi suits smaller groups of four to eight. All come with crew, chef and surf guides. Public trips are the scheduled ones; private charters are also available if you have your own group.

Trips are sold as scheduled departures or private charters. You book your own flights and travel insurance; the operator handles the rest — transfers within the Maldives, meals, boat, guiding, coaching. A pre-trip questionnaire is sent out so the team knows your surf level, board quiver and anything else before you land.
