Home › Retreats › Maldives Surf Cruise: 7 Days of Boat-Based Surfing on World-Class Reef Breaks
Maldives · 7 days
The Maldivian surf season runs April to October. That window brings drier weather, lighter winds, and the kind of clean, consistent swell the country is known for. April and October are the shoulder months — still strong swell, but fewer boats and fewer people in the lineup. The trip runs on a fixed weekly schedule, with the boat departing from Malé and returning a week later.
Each day has two or three surf sessions, timed around tides and swell. When a set is on, you load onto a smaller support boat that runs you out to the break, and it picks you up when you're done. Surfing happens on reef passes — this means powerful waves over shallow coral, and you should be comfortable with strong currents. It also means clear water, steep takeoffs, and long rides when the conditions line up.
This is not a learn-to-surf trip. The minimum is around 300 hours of surf experience, and most people on board are somewhere between high-intermediate and advanced. You'll want a shortboard for the faster, more powerful days, a fish for smaller ones, or a funboard/hybrid if you'd rather travel with one board. On top of that you need leashes, fins, wax and reef shoes. The sun is strong, so a rashguard, long-sleeve top, leggings and a surf hat with a chin strap are worth packing, along with 50+ reef-safe sunscreen.
Between sessions, all meals are served on board — three a day, cooked fresh by the boat's chefs. The food is Maldivian: tuna-based dishes like mas huni at breakfast, fish curry (mas riha), clear fish broth (garudhiya), coconut chicken curry (kukulhu riha), and fried snacks like bajiya and gulha. It's simple, filling, and geared to people who are burning energy in the water.
The boat itself serves as your base for the whole week. You'll sleep in cabins on board, wake up anchored near a break, and surf until the light goes. Beyond the waves, the crew runs weekly beach cleanups and recycling as part of the operation's ocean commitment. It's not a spa trip, a yoga retreat, or a sightseeing tour — it's a surf trip where the accommodation floats.
