Music and Nature Raga Retreat in the Australian Rainforest

Music and Nature Raga Retreat in the Australian Rainforest

New South Wales · 6 days · From USD 835

The retreat is hosted by Shivam Rath, a second-generation Indian-Australian musician who has studied with masters like Pandit Debashish Bhattacharya and Riley Lee. He brings together Indian classical raga, mantra, and modern sound in a way that’s accessible to beginners. The program includes daily yoga, meditation, pranayama, and workshops on raga theory and rhythm, plus guest facilitators who lead sessions on tea ceremony, sound healing, and art therapy.

Each day has a clear structure: mornings are for sadhana (yoga, pranayama, mantra), afternoons dive into raga practice and improvisation, and evenings are for kirtan, sound healing, and raga circles. There’s also time for nature immersion—guided forest walks, swimming in the river, and sitting by the fire. The aim is to experience music as a living practice, not just something to perform, and the landscape around you becomes part of that practice.

What makes this retreat different is its focus on sound as a pathway to presence and connection. It’s not just a yoga retreat with some music thrown in; it’s a deep dive into the tradition of Nāda Yoga. You’ll learn about the emotional and spiritual qualities of different ragas, practice call-and-response singing, and explore how sound can be used for healing and meditation. By the end, you’ll have a new way of listening—to music, to nature, and to yourself.

The location, Ecoasis Mami Wata, is a small retreat center in the Tweed Valley, near Uki. The accommodations range from private forest chalets to a simple camping area, all set in lush rainforest. The center has a yoga shala, a tea temple, and beautiful views towards Mount Warning. It’s a peaceful, grounded space that feels far from the normal tourist trail.
