Myanmar Lake Yoga & Service Retreat: 6 Days of Practice and Purpose on Inle's Hidden Waters

Myanmar · 6 days

The retreat is based at Inle Sanctuary, an ecolodge on Sakar Lake (also called Samka Lake), which sits on the border of Shan State and Kayah State. The location is deliberately remote — reaching it takes a flight and a minivan ride — and that's part of the point: it sees far fewer visitors than Inle Lake and remains largely untouched by large-scale tourism. The lodge runs on 100% solar power, sources all its food locally, and supports development in Phayartaung village.

The six stilt houses are built on a pier jutting into the middle of the lake, so you're surrounded by water on all sides. Each is constructed from locally sourced hardwood and bamboo, with large picture windows and an outside deck with loungers. Sunrise and sunset over the lake are the standout moments, and at night the deck is where people sit to watch the stars.

Daily practice is led by teachers experienced with mixed-level groups — the general level runs from complete beginners to advanced practitioners and yoga teachers. The schedule includes yoga and meditation alongside the service component. The core activity of the week is the sewing workshop: participants first receive training in how to sew reusable cloth pads themselves, then take part in teaching girls in Phayartaung village to sew their own. The activities leading up to the village workshop are structured around preparing you for that exchange.

The retreat runs in support of Seva Seed, a women-led social initiative run by a volunteer community in Singapore. Its aim is to revitalise menstrual practices in a healthy and environmentally sustainable way, provide menstrual health education, and open up dialogue about the topic in underprivileged communities. Ten percent of the retreat proceeds go to Seva Seed.

Practical logistics are tightly organised. The group gathers at Yangon International Airport at 6:30am on day one, at the domestic terminal. You need to be in Yangon the day before. Flights between Yangon and Heho (roughly one hour) are included in the price and booked on your behalf, followed by a minivan transfer from Heho Airport to the resort. If you're already travelling within Myanmar, you can buy your own flight and the retreat price will be adjusted; public buses also connect Phayartaung to other parts of the country.

What sets this apart from other yoga retreats in the region is the combination of a genuinely remote, eco-built lakeside setting and a hands-on service project with a defined outcome. You leave having practised daily, learned a practical skill, and contributed to a specific initiative rather than just having stayed somewhere beautiful. The cap of 15 people keeps the group close, and the policy that everyone begins and ends together shapes the atmosphere — quiet, focused, and built around shared work.
