Oceanfront Caribbean Yoga & Aerial Yoga Escape in Las Galeras

Dominican Republic · 6 days

A typical day at Villa Serena starts early with yoga on the oceanfront shala while it's still cool, followed by breakfast on the sea-view terrace. Breakfast is both a buffet and a menu — hot coffee, cereal, pastries, plus made-to-order omelettes. Mornings then open up: some groups run a second class or workshop, others head to the small private beach for a swim, take out a kayak or paddleboard, or snorkel with the hotel's free equipment. Lunch is served in the restaurant or arranged to fit the group's schedule.

Afternoons are for excursions or rest. The boat trip to Playa Rincón takes 10–15 minutes across choppy water and is the excursion guests mention most — a wild, fun ride to a long white-sand beach. Horseback riding to El Limón waterfall is the other standard, with guides who look after nervous riders. Closer to home, La Playita is a ten-minute walk away, with a white tent serving shrimp, calamari and fresh fries. Back at the hotel, the pool is a popular spot in the late afternoon heat.

Evenings are dinner, then usually nothing more organised than a drink on the terrace. The dinner menu changes every night, and the kitchen is used to cooking around dietary needs — one guest had gluten-free breads baked fresh each morning, including a yucca bread. There's often a group class or meditation before dinner, or a Zumba session with general manager Marina, who has been teaching Zumba for eleven years and yoga for six.

What separates Villa Serena from a bigger Caribbean resort is scale. With just over 20 rooms and no crowds or loud music, groups effectively take over the property. Past retreat hosts consistently mention having the outdoor shala entirely to themselves, and the staff — Angelina, Marina, Fernando at reception, Kervin, the bartender, the massage therapist — are named over and over in reviews. Airport transfers can be arranged at a fair price, and free activities like kayaking, paddleboarding and snorkelling equipment are included for guests.

The hotel also works with groups who want something other than yoga: team-building sessions, business meetings, wellness workshops, and events with local community involvement. Groups can bring their own teachers and facilitators, or use the hotel's own faculty, who between them cover yoga (Hatha, Iyengar, Kundalini), aerial yoga, meditation, mindfulness, Zumba, homeopathy and group psychotherapy.

Villa Serena was designed and built 27 years ago by Natasha Despotovic, who still teaches yoga and practises homeopathy between Washington DC and Samaná. That personal history shows — the gardens are mature and well kept, the architecture is old-world Caribbean rather than chain-hotel, and the whole place runs on a small-team, family feel.
