Home › Retreats › One-to-One Yoga & Meditation Retreat in Gunjur, The Gambia
Europe · 2 days · From USD 135
The retreat takes place at Arijaana, a guesthouse and retreat space that opened in 2022 with the goal of helping people return to nature. The property can host up to eight guests total, but this particular package is intentionally limited to one guest at a time. That means you get the full attention of your host, Lisa, who is also your yoga and meditation teacher. Lisa has been practicing for over 15 years and brings a calm, encouraging presence to each session. When you book, you’ll arrange a time for your private session—likely in the morning when the garden is cool and the birds are most active.
The yoga and meditation session happens in the garden, under a massive tree that acts as a natural canopy. Guests often describe this space as magical—the dappled light, the sound of birds, and the earthy scent of the forest create an atmosphere that’s hard to replicate in a studio. Lisa adapts the practice to your level, whether you’re a complete beginner or have been practicing for years. Hatha yoga is the primary style, but the meditation component can range from breathwork to guided visualizations, depending on what you’re seeking.
Your stay includes one night in a private room with an ensuite bathroom, plus three meals: breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The food is fresh, locally sourced, and largely vegetarian, with produce coming from neighboring gardens. You’ll taste Gambian cuisine—dishes with peanut, okra, and locally grown vegetables—served in a beautiful outdoor setting. Between meals, you can swim in the pool, take a short walk to the ocean (Gunjur is right on the coast), or arrange any of the nearby activities like cycling, fishing, or a safari. The pace is entirely up to you.
What makes this retreat special is the intimacy. You’re not part of a crowd; you’re a guest in someone’s home. The accommodation is simple but comfortable, and the facilities include free Wi-Fi (8am–8pm) and a shared garden and pool. The review from a past guest, Heydi, captures the essence: waking to birds and the ocean, eating freshly picked fruit, and feeling deeply connected to nature and herself. She called her week in Gunjur “paradise on Earth.” This shorter one-night version of the experience is perfect for those passing through the area or looking for a sample of what Arijaana offers.
