Peniche Surf Camp: Lessons, Boards and Ocean-View Rooms in Portugal

Portugal · 7 days · From EUR 350

A typical day here starts early because the surf centre opens at sunrise. You grab a board and a Rip Curl wetsuit, and head out with your instructor to whichever spot is working best that day — there are multiple breaks within walking distance, and the team picks based on your level and the conditions. Beginner lessons focus on the basics: paddling, popping up, reading whitewater. Intermediate and advanced surfers get coaching on technique, positioning and wave selection. You'll be in the water for a proper session, not a token hour.

After surfing, there's time to eat and rest. The camp has a shared kitchen if you want to cook, and there are cafés, a mini market, surf shops and restaurants right next to the building. Beach bars are a few steps away, and the rooftop terrace is where most people end up in the afternoon, watching the ocean and planning the next session. Some afternoons there are yoga classes or a massage available if you want to recover.

The accommodation side is flexible. The surf camp hostel is the most popular option — shared bunk rooms, most with private bathrooms, spacious common areas, and that ocean-view terrace. If you'd rather have your own space, you can book a private ensuite room, a studio, or a fully equipped apartment. All of them are within walking distance of the beach and the surf. Families and couples tend to go for the private options; solo travellers and groups often take the hostel.

What sets this place apart is the equipment and the experience behind it. The surf centre isn't just a rental shack — they do board repairs, custom shapes, and sell used gear. They've got longboards, shortboards, funboards, PU, epoxy and softboards, plus wetsuits for kids from age two. The instructors have been doing this for decades, and the school has been officially running since 2004. It's not a pop-up operation.

The location in Peniche is one of the most consistent surf destinations in Portugal, which means you're not gambling on waves. There's also a photo service so you can get shots of your sessions, and transfers can be arranged. Evenings are low-key — people hang out at the camp or head to the beach bars. It's a social place without being a party camp, though there's definitely a 'surf all day, smile with us' vibe if you want it.
