Prana Yoga and Wellness Retreat on the Beaches of Zanzibar

Prana Yoga and Wellness Retreat on the Beaches of Zanzibar

Tanzania · 7 days · From USD 1299

The retreat is built around the practice of Prana yoga, a form that Rose teaches with a strong focus on the subtle body and the chakra system. Each class starts with meditation and a sun salutation sequence, then moves into asanas themed around a particular chakra, and ends with a long relaxation. Postures are held for longer than in a typical flow class, which Rose says allows energy to move on a subtle level and can release emotions, tension, and thoughts. There's a lot of personal adjustment and explanation during class, and the goal is less about perfecting a pose and more about coming back to yourself. The teaching draws on the Course in Miracles, with forgiveness as a key part of the process, and it's all aimed at a genuinely transformative experience, not just a workout.

Rose has been teaching since she founded her studio uBuntuYoga in Amsterdam in 2001, and she's trained hundreds of teachers in Prana yoga over the years. She's spent time in India, South Africa, and England, and now runs ZamZam House in Zanzibar. Her style is calm, clear, and very experienced—she's comfortable holding space for the emotional stuff that can come up in practice, and she's known for her warmth and the safe environment she creates. The reviews from previous guests all mention how at ease they felt in her classes and how they learned more than just physical yoga.

The accommodation is a real highlight. ZamZam House is a beautiful, airy building that blends Omani architecture with local Zanzibari craftsmanship. Rooms have handmade king-size beds, natural-dyed fabrics, and neru flooring (a sand and limestone mix). There are four spaces in total: two rooms and two studios, all with private bathrooms and either one or two beds. The house is set in a village of Swahili houses, with a tropical garden, and it's a short stroll to the beach. Two rooftop terraces overlook the ocean—one is the yoga space, the other has a hammock and a 'babu chair' and is where brunch is served. It's the kind of place where you can take your coffee up top and watch the sun rise over the Indian Ocean.

Jambiani is a traditional fishing village, and the beach life follows the tides. At low tide, the water recedes to expose seaweed farms and sandbanks, and you can walk out to a deeper channel for a swim; at high tide, you can float right off the shore. It's a peaceful, authentic part of the island, away from the resorts, and there are plenty of optional excursions—mangrove SUP tours, sunset dhow cruises, snorkeling, visits to Stone Town, or exploring the nearby caves. Evenings are flexible: dinner together at the house or at a local spot, or some quiet time on the rooftop. The week is designed to give you space to go deep in practice and also to really experience Zanzibar.
