Costa Rica · 7 days · From USD 11987
The retreat is built around the idea that no two families travel alike, so Mario and Jamie design each week from scratch based on what you actually want to do. If surfing is the priority, you can go twice a day, with Mario reading the swell and choosing between Montezuma's point breaks and Santa Teresa's beach breaks to find the best conditions for each family member's level. He's a certified Costa Rican national tour guide and lifelong surfer who grew up on these waves, and he's especially known for teaching children—patient, encouraging, and good at making lessons stick. When the waves aren't the focus, the week shifts toward waterfall hikes, river swims, jungle walks, fishing excursions, cooking classes, and visits to quiet beaches far from the tourist crowds. Afternoons often include a gentle yoga or mobility session with Jamie, who has practiced since age 12 and focuses on recovery and keeping the body feeling good between surf sessions. Montezuma itself is a laid-back town on the Nicoya Peninsula, about 25 minutes from Santa Teresa by car, with artisan markets, jungle trails, and the Cabo Blanco reserve right next door in Cabuya. You'll stay at Zumaloft, a family-built property that's both your private base and a home where monkeys and toucans swing through the trees. The couple lives in a separate house on the grounds, so help is always a knock away, but your space stays your own. By the end of the week, the goal is that you leave feeling less like tourists and more like friends who've been welcomed into someone's real life in Costa Rica.
