Recharge & Reset: A Fitness and Wellness Spa Retreat Near London

United Kingdom · 2 days · From USD 350

The Glass House opened as the UK's first purpose-built wellness retreat and spa. It sits in the Essex countryside, about an hour from central London, and everything is under one roof: guest rooms, a gym, studios, a spa, a pool, and a restaurant. The building is modern, with lots of natural light, clean lines, and a calm feel. Because it's purpose-built, there's no awkward conversion — the spaces flow well and are designed for the kind of stay where you move between a class and a treatment without leaving the building.

The daily schedule changes each day, but a typical morning starts with a fitness class like HIIT or strength training, followed by breakfast. Mid-morning might offer yoga or Pilates, then lunch. Afternoons are open for spa treatments, cryotherapy, or just relaxing by the pool. There's usually an evening class such as restorative yoga or meditation, then dinner. You can join as many or as few as you want — nothing is compulsory, and the instructors are used to mixed abilities.

The fitness offering is broader than most wellness retreats. There's a fully equipped gym, a studio for classes, and cryotherapy chambers for recovery. Classes range from high-intensity interval training and circuit sessions to kettlebells, boxing, and dance-based workouts, alongside more gentle options like yoga, Pilates, and stretch classes. The spa has a hydrotherapy pool, sauna, steam room, experience showers, and a range of treatments from massages to facials. The cryotherapy is a standout — it's not something you find at many retreats in the UK.

Food is a big part of the experience. Meals are prepared by the kitchen team and focus on whole foods, plenty of vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats. There's no alcohol, and portions are designed to satisfy without leaving you sluggish. Menus change daily and can accommodate most dietary requirements with advance notice. Expect dishes like grilled fish with quinoa and roasted vegetables, or lentil salads with feta and herbs, plus fresh juices and smoothies.

The accommodation is simple but comfortable, with rooms that have everything you need for a restful night: good beds, en-suite bathrooms, and a calm colour scheme. Some rooms overlook the countryside. There are no TVs in the rooms, which helps you switch off, but there is Wi-Fi throughout if you need it. The retreat is adults-only and has a quiet policy in the evenings.

What really sets The Glass House apart is the flexibility. You can book a two-night fitness-focused stay or a longer spa break, and the team will help you plan your days around what you want to achieve. They offer a 'personalised retreat planner' that asks about your goals and suggests a schedule, but there's no pressure to stick to it. If you want to spend all day in the spa, that's fine. If you want to do five classes a day, that's fine too. The lack of judgement is refreshing — it's a place where you can be yourself.
