United States · 7 days · From USD 1208
The retreat is based at the Hansens' bed and breakfast, a large home set on five acres of orchard and gardens in Leeds, Utah. Each guest gets a private room with its own entrance and bathroom, giving you a sense of privacy you don't always find at small retreats. The property has a swim spa, a tree house, a pickleball court, and plenty of space to wander. Mornings start with a farm-fresh breakfast, and you can either join the day's planned activity or set out on your own. If you want company, there are guided hikes into the surrounding red rock country, where the host shares knowledge about the local geology, plants, and wildlife. One evening, you'll gather in an authentic tipi for a pow wow, learning to make bow drill fires and hearing about Native American history.
The location is the centerpiece. Zion National Park, with its towering sandstone cliffs and famous trails like the Narrows, is half an hour away. Bryce Canyon, known for its surreal hoodoos, is about two hours, and the Grand Canyon's South Rim is also around two hours. Four Utah state parks — including Quail Creek and Sand Hollow — are within 30 minutes, offering swimming, paddleboarding, and fishing. The Hansens provide complimentary paddleboards for use at Quail Creek, and they'll pack you a picnic lunch to take on your adventures. One of the complimentary nights can be used to extend your stay, though meals aren't included that day.
Because the retreat is self-guided, you can make it as active or as restful as you want. Some guests will spend every day hiking; others might spend a morning in the orchard picking fruit and an afternoon in the swim spa. The hosts are there to help you plan, whether that means recommending a trail, booking a show at the nearby Tuacahn outdoor amphitheater, or simply leaving you alone to enjoy the peace. The Hansens have lived in this area for years and know the best spots for photography, scenic drives, and quiet corners of the parks.
For many people, the highlight is the sense of space and freedom. There's no pressure to keep up with a group, and no guilt about skipping an activity. But if you do want structure, the guided hiking day is a chance to explore with a local who can show you hidden gems. The tipi evening is another memorable moment, offering a window into a different way of connecting with the land. This retreat works well for solo travelers who value independence, for couples who want a comfortable base for exploring the parks, and for anyone who's been to a structured retreat and wanted more flexibility.
