Rhön Active Escape: Yoga, Hiking and Cycling at a Biohotel in the Bavarian Hills

Bavaria · 7 days

The Rhön is one of Germany's least known walking regions and one of its best. Basalt peaks, open high moor, orchards and beech forest sit inside a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and the trail network is enormous — over 9,000 km of marked paths, with hikes starting straight from the hotel door or from one of the many trailhead car parks nearby. If you walk to the Kreuzberg monastery at 928 m you'll cross moorland and farmland with almost nobody around. The Wasserkuppe, the high point of the range, is a half-day hike. The Milseburg has its own set of local ghost stories if you like your walks with a bit of folklore.

Cyclists get a very good deal here. About 100 routes connect at roughly 150 junctions, so you can string together a ride of any length, from rolling valley roads to proper single trail. The hotel keeps a bike box with charging for e-bikes, and tours begin at the front door. If you're more comfortable on a bike than on foot, this is the better way to see the reserve.

Yoga runs alongside the outdoor programme through the hotel's active-partner team. Sessions are led by an experienced teacher and pair with an Ayurvedic chef in the kitchen, and the format is deliberately slower than a fitness retreat — deep meditation, philosophical input, and a range of yoga elements across the sessions, private or group. You are not committed to a set schedule of classes; you book what you want and spend the rest of the day outside.

The wider hotel programme is what separates this from a straightforward walking hotel. There's a state-trained team of active partners on call, and guests can build a week around guided hikes, guided rides, yoga, cultural excursions to Fulda or Bad Kissingen, or nothing at all. The kitchen is certified organic and can handle most dietaries with notice. Evenings tend towards sauna, dinner, and an early night before an eight o'clock start the next morning.

It's worth being clear about what this is: a good four-season active hotel with genuine guides, not a fixed week-long retreat with a set group. You come, you pick your activities, you walk or ride every day, and you leave fitter than you arrived.
