Home › Retreats › Saddle & Soul: Women-Only Horse Ranch Wellness Escape in the Tatra Mountains
Poland · 7 days · From EUR 395
The ranch sits in southern Poland, in the hill country below the Tatra range, surrounded by pasture and forest rather than other tourist businesses. Guests stay on site in the main lodge: a large shared room with four bunk beds and one double bed, plus two bathrooms between the group. There are fridges, a kettle, crockery and cutlery in the communal area, a big table for meals, a bonfire pit and a sauna. It is comfortable and warm rather than luxurious — think wooden bunks, checked blankets, and a lot of horse gear drying by the door.
Riding is the core of the week and it is structured so that mixed-ability groups can ride together. Mornings usually start with feeding and mucking out before breakfast, then a lesson in the arena for the less experienced while stronger riders head out on a hack. Beginners learn walk, trot and the beginnings of canter, plus how to groom, pick out hooves, and tack up their own horse. Riders with more experience are taken out further into the fields and woods, with plenty of trot and canter work. Instructors are on hand throughout — this is a teaching yard, not a trekking centre that puts you on a horse and points it at a hill.
The afternoons quieten down: some people ride again, others nap, read on the grass, or use the sauna. Archery targets are set up on the property for anyone who wants a go, and one evening there is a bonfire with sausages cooked over the fire. Food is cooked on site — proper Polish home cooking with soups, dumplings, roast meats, salads and cakes, and vegetarians are catered for if you say so at booking.
The week also includes an excursion into the local area, usually to Zakopane or a nearby mountain valley, depending on the group and the weather. Evenings are sociable but early: cards, a beer or a glass of wine, and bed, because the horses get fed at seven whether you are hungover or not. The whole point is that you leave having actually improved as a rider, with the muscle memory to prove it.
