Silent Meditation & Hridaya Yoga Retreat in the Transylvanian Hills

Romania · 7 days

The centre is at 408C Poarta Campului Street, Sânpetru, 507190, Brașov, Romania — a village 2 km outside Brașov, bordered by forest and the Dealul Lempeș nature reserve. Brașov itself is about 2 hours 45 minutes by train from Bucharest North, and there are direct shuttle buses (DirectAirport, Kron Transfer, Transfer Low Cost) from Otopeni airport to Brașov. From the Brașov railway station you take bus 8 to Rulmentul, then bus 420 to Sânpetru, getting off in the town centre near the historic church. Uber, Bolt and taxis also run from Brașov.

Hridaya Yoga itself is the Yoga of the Spiritual Heart — the practice centres on self-inquiry (the question "Who am I?") alongside classic Hatha postures. Sessions are led by teachers with more than 40 years of combined experience, and the centre follows the teaching line established by Sahajananda. The retreats have run continuously since 2007, twice annually, which means the schedule and the teaching method are well settled rather than experimental.

What makes this different from a generic yoga week is the silence. Silent retreats here mean no talking between participants for the duration, no phones in the meditation hall, and no small talk over meals. That structure is the point — it leaves room for the sitting practice and the self-inquiry to actually go somewhere. It suits people who have sat before and want depth, and it is also open to complete beginners provided they're willing to follow the silence.

Practical notes: the climate is temperate, averaging around 21°C in August and around -1°C in December, with the surrounding mountains getting much colder and offering skiing in winter. Bring breathable natural-fibre clothing for yoga, warm slippers in winter (flip-flops in summer), rain gear, a refillable water bottle and thermos, an alarm clock if you don't want your phone in the room, earplugs for meditation, and cash for the on-site shop. Mats and cushions are available if you don't bring your own, though you'll be asked to cover the centre's mats with a sarong or towel. Plugs and sockets are generally two-pronged and non-polar, so bring an adapter if your appliances use polar or three-pronged plugs.

There are three Hridaya centres in total — Romania, Mexico (Mazunte, on the Oaxacan coast) and France (Longeval). If the Transylvania dates don't work, the same teachings run at the other two, but the Romanian centre is the one that's been running the silent retreats since 2007.
