United States · 5 days · From EUR 850
Yogaville sits on 750 acres near Buckingham, Virginia, about 90 minutes from Charlottesville and a little over two hours from Richmond. The community was founded in 1980 by Swami Satchidananda and is home to the Light Of Truth Universal Shrine (LOTUS), a domed building with altars representing eleven different world religions — it's one of the most photographed spots on the property and guests on this retreat can visit it during free time. The grounds are wooded, with walking trails, a small lake, and enough space that you can genuinely be alone with your thoughts for an hour if you want to be.
The retreat itself is a structured silent retreat built around Integral Yoga, a system combining Hatha postures with pranayama, chanting and seated meditation. Days at Yogaville begin early — the ashram's own daily schedule starts well before sunrise with a morning meditation, and on retreat weeks that rhythm holds. Mornings typically open with a meditation sitting followed by a Hatha Yoga class. Breakfast comes after, taken in the dining hall. The middle of the day brings more yoga, a talk or guided session, and then a long block of free time in the afternoon for walking, journaling, resting or visiting the shrine. Another yoga or meditation session runs in the evening, then dinner, then an early night.
What separates this from a typical weekend yoga retreat is the silence. Guests don't chat over meals or compare notes on the classes. That silence is the practice, not a restriction — it's what makes it possible to slow down enough to actually notice what's going on in your head. Teachers give instructions during classes and talks, but outside those sessions the expectation is quiet, and the rules around phones and reading materials are explained at check-in.
Swami Karunananda, E-RYT 500, is the lead teacher on both the fall and New Year's retreats listed here, sometimes alongside Swan Michelle, E-RYT 500. Karunananda is a senior monk in the Integral Yoga tradition and has been teaching retreats of this kind for many years; she's known for a direct, unhurried teaching style and for keeping the schedule in place rather than filling every hour with talk. The New Year's retreat runs December 28 to January 2 and includes a New Year's Eve sitting rather than a party.
Food is a bigger part of the week than you'd expect in a silent retreat. Yogaville has run its own vegetarian kitchen for decades, and the three meals a day are simple, substantial and mostly plant-based — think soups, whole grains, salads, curries and bread baked on site. Guests often remark that they sleep better here than they have in months, which is partly the silence and partly the fact that you're going to bed at nine and getting up at five.
