Home › Retreats › Sound Healing, Yoga & Massage Wellness Retreat by the Bentota River
Sri Lanka · 6 days · From USD 440
Each day at Mangrove Villa follows a relaxed but steady structure. Mornings begin with pranayama and Hatha yoga on the open-sided shala that looks out over the Bentota River. After breakfast there is time for an Ayurvedic massage — the package includes two full-body Abhyanga oil massages and one face, head, and shirodhara treatment. Sound healing meditation happens most afternoons, using singing bowls and gongs to create deep, buzzing vibrations that carry through the room. Later, restorative yoga loosens the body before dinner.
The sound healing is central here, and the villa is one of the few places in the Beruwala area offering it as a dedicated practice. The idea is simple: the vibrations from the bowls and gong help drop the brain into a slower wave state, which in turn eases tension and supports better sleep. It is not a passive soundtrack — you lie down and feel the sound move through you, often for a full hour.
Massage is treated as a core part of the experience, not an add-on. The Abhyanga massage uses warm oil over the whole body, and the shirodhara treatment drips warm oil steadily onto the forehead — a technique aimed at calming the mind. Both are included, which makes this retreat genuinely good value when you add up what similar treatments cost elsewhere.
Roshan de Silva, who has run retreats here since 2011, leads the yoga and sound sessions. He is a 200-hour Yoga Alliance-certified teacher with additional sound healing training, and he speaks English, Sinhalese, and Russian. Guests often comment on how attentive he is, and the small group size — normally six to twelve people — means the schedule can flex around what you actually need.
The villa itself is on 1.5 acres of land where cinnamon, fruit trees, and mangroves grow down to the riverbank. You can borrow bicycles, walk to Bentota's beach in about ten minutes by tuk-tuk, or just stay put on the sunbeds under the trees. The pace is slow, and nothing is compulsory. If you skip an afternoon sound bath to nap or read, no one minds.
