El Salvador · 7 days · From EUR 1585
The whole camp is built on something called The Surf Sequence, a progression path the academy compares to the belt system in martial arts. You don't just get taught how to surf; you get taught how to train. Each level has defined skills and you move up when you've got them, with concepts adapted to where you actually are rather than a fixed syllabus everyone follows.
Beginner is for people with 0 to 10 sessions in the ocean — typically no real familiarity with the water. The focus is a sequence of steps for the fundamentals, with close support so you build confidence before anything else. Novice is for surfers already paddling out and catching unbroken waves on their own. At this stage the priority is ride length rather than maneuvers, and you learn a repeatable sequence for going out and having fun within the methodology. Foundation is the top group: surfers who position themselves on the peak accurately, take off with confidence and can do top-to-bottom maneuvers down the line, generating speed at take-off and consistently completing waves. The goal there is training independently after the camp, using the same structure.
A typical coaching day: theory and warm-up for 30 minutes, then the filmed surf session with your coach, then a 45-minute video analysis, then 45 minutes of drills. The afternoon slot varies by day — restorative yoga at 4pm on one day, a mobility class at 4pm on another, the ice bath experience (breathwork plus immersion) midweek, a half-day tour at 1pm on the six-day programme, and a self-defense or BJJ class at 6pm on another. Board rental is included each coaching day and your coach picks something from the quiver that suits you — you can bring your own board and use it all week instead if you'd rather.
Groups are capped at four per level and camps have limited spots in total, which is the main thing that separates this from the bigger surf schools. The academy also runs an academy programme alongside the camps, which is part of why the coaching is structured around long-term progression rather than getting tourists standing up once. Conditions can shut down in-water sessions — that's part of surfing — and when it happens the programme switches to out-of-water work on technique, theory and physical preparation, with coaches sometimes extending later sessions if there's time left in the camp. Cancelled sessions due to natural conditions aren't refunded or credited, which is worth knowing before you book.
