Summer Solstice Yoga Weekend in the Belgian Countryside

The weekend runs from Friday at 6pm to Sunday at 4pm. Arrival is between 18:00 and 18:30 on Friday, with dinner at 18:30. The first class is Yin Yoga from 20:30 to 22:00. It's slow, with long-held floor postures, and it finishes with a sound bath. It's an easy way to settle in after the drive.

Saturday has the most practice. Meditation at 7:30 goes straight into a Morning Flow class from 7:45 to 8:45, then breakfast. From 10:00 to 11:00 is karma yoga: you help prepare food in the kitchen or work in the garden. Hatha Yoga Flow runs from 11:45 to 12:45, followed by lunch and free time until 16:00. You can walk around the property, try some meditative drawing, read, or do nothing. Late afternoon has a 45-minute pranayama (breathing techniques) session and a Hatha Flow class from 17:00 to 18:00. After dinner, Yoga Nidra is a guided relaxation done lying down. Most people come close to sleeping during it.

Sunday is the solstice morning. At 6:30 there's a 108 Sun Salutations practice, a traditional way to mark the longest day. It's entirely optional, so you can sleep in if you'd rather. The rest of the morning follows Saturday's pattern of meditation, Morning Flow and breakfast, then there's a walk at 10:00 instead of karma yoga. After a final Hatha Flow class and lunch, everyone helps clean up. The weekend closes with mantra singing from 15:15 to 16:00, then snacks before you leave.

The classes cover quite a range. Hatha Flow mixes held postures with flowing sequences timed to the breath, so you get some strength work as well as stretching. Yin Yoga is the opposite: slow and passive, aimed at flexibility and releasing tension. Yoga Nidra is a guided meditation done lying down. Pranayama introduces several breathing techniques over the weekend. Every class is pitched at all levels, so you don't need yoga experience to come.

The karma yoga slot is one of the things that sets this weekend apart from a typical yoga getaway. Spending an hour helping cook the vegetarian meals or working in the garden makes the house feel more like a shared home than a hotel. The group helps clean up on Sunday too.

Dongelberg is a small village in Walloon Brabant, surrounded by fields and quiet lanes. You can drive there from Brussels in about 45 minutes, or take the train and a bus. Elise can also put you in touch with others carsharing from Brussels if you need a lift.
