Home › Retreats › Surf and Yoga Week in Cantabria: Tepee Camp on Playa de Oyambre
Spain · 8 days · From EUR 429
Surfing happens at Playa de Oyambre, a 10-minute walk from camp. The region picks up a constant swell through the summer, which is why the beach works well for beginners and improvers. Lessons run as six sessions of 90 minutes each: five in the water and one theory session at camp covering the marine plan, safety and how to behave at the local spot. Groups are capped at eight surfers per instructor, with a surf assistant added if needed, and all equipment is lent for the lessons. Intermediate surfers spend more of the session in the water with an instructor working on specific things. You can also hire kit outside lesson time and surf whenever you like.
Yoga runs on a large covered platform above the camp with mountain views. The weekly programme has two sessions a day, taught so that all levels can join, and once a week the session moves to the beach at sunset. The Deluxe package includes five of these sessions; on the other packages you can add yoga as an extra.
Beyond surfing and yoga you can take a stand-up paddle tour, head into San Vicente de la Barquera, Comillas and the surrounding towns, or pick from other outdoor activities in the area. The camp runs an events programme through the week, and the raised, covered chill-out area with cushions turns into an open-air cinema.
Where you sleep is part of the deal here. Standard accommodation is a large bell tent sleeping up to eight, shared with a maximum of two other guests, with a central mast, zipped mesh curtain, mesh windows at the base for ventilation, and enough height for a surfboard and enough floor space for morning stretches. For more comfort there are bell tents for two with raised wooden beds (twin or double mattresses), a power socket and light, and more space. The tepees are newer: raised wooden beds, a socket and light, a private terrace, insect protection, and an overlapping skirt around the wooden floor that keeps the rain out. Every tent type can be booked by solo travellers.
Nights in northern Spain get cold, so bedding is a paid option — pillow, duvet, sheets and blankets — which means you can travel light. The camp sits within a bigger campsite with a restaurant and café with Wi-Fi, a kiosk, a swimming pool, a basketball/multisport pitch and several toilet blocks.
