The property at Amaru is spread organically across a jungle headland, with the yoga shala tucked under two big banyan trees and looking straight out over the Pacific. You'll hear the waves through the whole practice. The daily rhythm is set by the tides—some mornings you're in the water at first light, others you're on the mat. Surf groups are kept small, and Gerritt, who holds a university-level grounding in surf theory, is out there reading the swell with you and helping you find the right takeoff spot. After a late-morning breakfast there's nothing scheduled until lunch, so it's genuinely your time—sleep, read, or wander down to the beach.
What makes this place different is the balance. There's no push to be constantly active. The owners built it around the idea that the ocean is a teacher, and that stillness matters as much as exercise. Even the food is part of that: mostly vegetarian, with fish whenever the local boats come in, and plenty of vegan options. Evenings drift into sunset activities, dinner around seven, and a salsa night on Thursdays if you've still got energy.
Guests keep coming back—several reviews are from second or third visits—because it feels less like a resort and more like a laid-back community where you quickly know everyone's name. The staff, led by Gabba and Gerritt, set that tone from the first welcome. If you want to arrive stressed and leave with your head clear, this is a good place for it.
