Portugal · 7 days · From EUR 1162
The retreat runs out of a base in the Algarve, close enough to the beach that you walk to the surf. A typical day starts with breakfast, then surf theory or a quick warm-up, then into the water for a coached session. Groups are split by ability, so total beginners aren't in the same lineup as people who can already turn. Instructors are in the water with you, not watching from the sand. After lunch there's downtime — some people sleep, some read, some go for a walk. Late afternoon yoga is either on a deck or indoors depending on the weather, and it's aimed at surfers: lots of shoulder and hip opening, lots of core work. Dinner is served family-style, usually fish or a vegetarian main, and then most people crash.
The surf coaching is the main event. You get video analysis some days, and the instructors actually explain why a wave broke the way it did instead of just yelling "paddle!". Boards and wetsuits are included, so you don't need to bring anything except a swimsuit and maybe your own rash guard if you're picky. The Algarve has consistent swell most of the year, and there are several beaches within a short drive so the team can pick the one with the best conditions that day. If it's flat, they'll take you somewhere else or switch to a longer yoga session and a hike.
Yoga is taught by instructors who surf, which makes a difference. The classes are not a generic vinyasa sequence — they're built around what you just did in the water. Expect a lot of pec stretching, thoracic rotation, and hip flexor work. There's also a massage included in the week-long package, and you can book extra sessions. Several people said the massage was the best part, which is saying something given how good the surf was.
The food is a highlight. Mostly vegetarian, lots of local produce, some fish, and they accommodate dietary needs if you tell them in advance. Breakfast is buffet-style with fruit, yogurt, eggs, and good bread. Lunch is often a big salad or grain bowl. Dinner is the main meal and it's not fussy — think grilled fish with roasted vegetables, or a chickpea curry with rice. Wine is available but not pushed. Coffee is good.
What makes this different from a standard surf camp is the yoga-and-massage layer. Plenty of places will teach you to surf. Fewer will also make sure your shoulders don't seize up and that you actually relax. The sustainable-ish approach is also real: they've thought about their impact and they're honest about the trade-offs. If that matters to you, you'll appreciate it. If it doesn't, you'll still have a great time.
The instructor team is made up of local surf coaches and yoga teachers, several of whom have been with the company for years. They know the breaks, they know the tides, and they know how to get a nervous beginner standing up on day one without making them feel like an idiot. The yoga teachers are certified and have been teaching long enough to adapt a class on the fly if everyone's wrecked from a big surf day.
