Canary Islands · 8 days · From USD 620
You'll be in good company here whether you've never stood on a board or you've already found your feet and want to sharpen up. The camp caters to both beginners and intermediates, and no prior experience is necessary. It suits anyone who wants to spend a week focused on the ocean, with instruction that's patient and genuinely skilled, and a yoga practice built around what surfing actually demands of your body. A reasonable level of general fitness will help, given you'll be in the water around four hours a day.
The surfing is run by Calima Surf, a school that's been teaching on this beach for 28 years and welcomes over 1,500 students a year. Your four hours daily in the water are split between theory and practice, with instructors who clearly know what they're doing. The yoga is led by Sandra, a Milan-born teacher trained in India, who tailors every class to the strength, balance and breathing that surfing asks of you, rather than running a generic stretch session. Across the eight days you'll have five days of surf course and three one-hour yoga classes, plus healthy-activity afternoons with functional surf-specific training and photo analysis of the week's shots.
You'll be based in Famara, on Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, staying in a private room within a shared surf house on the edge of the Chinijo nature reserve, a hundred metres from the beach. The house is around 250 square metres, shared with other surf enthusiasts from around the world, and the feel is more like a well-run shared apartment than a hotel: sociable, relaxed and very much a surf house. Rooms come with towels, sheets and blankets, and you can choose a single bed or two if you're travelling with someone. There's a fully equipped kitchen, a barbecue for warm evenings, a terrace where people gather after a day in the water, and wifi in the communal areas. You're inside a protected reserve, so the surroundings are quiet and unspoilt, with spectacular views of La Graciosa island and the village of Famara, with its supermarkets, restaurants and bars, nearby.
A typical day starts with breakfast around nine, cooked in the house or picked up in the village, followed by your surf session from ten, set to your level. Afternoons from around 14:30 are free to rest, explore or keep surfing on your own, since boards and wetsuits are yours to use on your booked days. Some afternoons bring a yoga class with Sandra at 17:30, others a functional training and photo-analysis session. It's an easy rhythm that keeps the focus firmly on the water.
The price covers seven nights' accommodation, five days of surf course with professional instructors, all surf equipment for beginner or intermediate level, three days of yoga with materials provided, the healthy-activity afternoons, professional event photos, a surf course certificate, and pre- and post-retreat support from the team. Meals aren't included, but the kitchen and the village between them make self-catering straightforward, and the local Canarian cuisine, especially the fresh fish, is worth trying while you're here. Flights, airport transfers, insurance and meals are not included, so do factor those in when you plan your trip.
