Home › Retreats › Swim with Humpback Whales in Tonga: 6-Night Freediving and Yoga Retreat
Tonga · 7 days · From AUD 6050
The retreat is based on 'Eua, a quieter island southeast of Tongatapu, and transfers from Nuku'alofa are included — either a charter flight or the ferry, depending on what's running. You stay six nights in relaxed shared rooms at a resort that sits right on the water, with whales frequently visible offshore. The resort has a sauna and ice bath, which get used most afternoons once the boats come back in.
Five of the six days are whale-swim days. You go out on licensed charter boats in small groups, which is what makes close encounters possible without crowding the animals. The approach is deliberately low-key: you're in the water as a snorkeller or freediver, not chasing, and the operators work to the Tongan regulations on whale interactions. Guests regularly see mothers with calves, and the males' songs carry through the water — that's the part most people remember.
Mornings start with movement before you get on the boat. The team leads pilates, yoga and breath-focused meditation, with the breathing work aimed specifically at extending breath-holds for freediving. There are optional workshops through the week too, covering techniques for staying calm and efficient underwater.
Afternoons and evenings fill in around the water time. There's a half-day island tour of 'Eua — it's a rugged island with forest, cliffs and caves rather than resort strip — plus marine biology presentations on Tonga's whales and sharks. One evening there's a bonfire and kava ceremony. Meals are included throughout, cooked with local ingredients, and there's filtered water, tea and coffee available.
This is run by Above Below Life, a freediving-focused outfit based in Bali. They also run liveaboards and other retreats, and the same morning movement format — pilates, yoga, breathwork — carries across their trips. You get an Above Below Freediver t-shirt as part of the package.
