Ulpotha Jungle Village Yoga & Ayurveda Retreat, Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka · 14 days · From USD 2200

Ulpotha sits on the edge of a lake in Sri Lanka's dry zone, surrounded by paddy fields, forest and the remains of ancient irrigation tanks the founders helped restore. The village was started in 1994 by Giles and Viren as a private estate exploring traditional Sri Lankan village life, and it grew into a yoga and Ayurveda retreat almost by accident. Thirty years on, the huts are still made of mud and adobe, the farming is still organic, and much of what you eat is harvested the same morning.

Daily life revolves around the yoga platform, a raised open-sided pavilion facing the water. Classes run twice a day — a stronger morning session and a slower, restorative evening one — and each fortnight a different visiting teacher leads the programme. Recent and upcoming teachers include Molly McLaughlin, James de Maria, Georgia Marnham (Iyengar), Mick Barnes (Hatha) and Florentina Lam-Clark, who also brings sound healing. That means the style shifts depending on which fortnight you book; if Iyengar alignment work appeals more than a flowing vinyasa, pick your dates accordingly.

The Ayurveda side is run by a resident doctor and therapists who prepare oils on site from herbs grown in the village. Treatments include full-body oil massage, shirodhara (warm oil poured over the forehead), herbal steam and poultices, and guests typically have a consultation early in their stay so a treatment plan can be set. It is real Ayurveda, not spa-style add-ons, and several of the massage oils are made with plants you can see growing outside the treatment hut.

What separates Ulpotha from other Sri Lankan yoga retreats is that there is no schedule to follow beyond the two yoga classes and your treatment times. Meals appear at roughly the same hours each day, and the rest is open. Guests swim, paddle the dugout canoe on the lake, walk to the neighbouring village, birdwatch, or do nothing at all. There is no bar, no evening entertainment and no wifi to speak of, which is exactly why people book two weeks rather than one.

The village is also genuinely off-grid and eco-minded: solar power, composting toilets, greywater systems and reforestation projects. That is not marketing language but the practical reason the huts are open-sided and the showers are outdoors. If you want five-star amenities this is not your place; if you want to sleep in a lantern-lit hut with the jungle outside and no lock on the door, it is hard to beat.
