Upper Mustang Trek to Lo Manthang: 15 Days in Nepal's Hidden Kingdom

Kathmandu · From USD 5000

Upper Mustang sits in the rain shadow north of the Annapurna range, a high, wind-carved desert of red cliffs, whitewashed villages and centuries-old monasteries. This 15-day trek, run by Kathmandu-based iFly Nepal, follows the Kali Gandaki valley north from Kagbeni to Lo Manthang, the walled former royal capital, and back again.

The walking days are moderate in length and mostly between 3,000 and 4,000 m, topping out at 3,840 m, but the terrain is dry, exposed and windy. Along the way you pass Chele, Syangboche, Ghami (known for its long mani walls) and Tsarang with its monastery and old fortress. You then spend a full day exploring Lo Manthang's old town, monasteries and royal palace, and another visiting the cliff cave settlements of Chhoser.

The trip runs from Kathmandu to Kathmandu. It includes flights to Pokhara and Jomsom, hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara, lodge or teahouse nights on the trail with all meals, the restricted area and Annapurna Conservation Area permits, a licensed English-speaking guide and porters. Groups are small, from 1 to 10 travellers.

March to November is the trekking season. May brings the colourful Tiji festival, and September to October usually gives the clearest skies.
