Each day at Battle Conquer follows a loose rhythm: morning yoga or meditation, a Muay Thai or boxing session, a break for lunch, then more training in the late afternoon. Between sessions you can join one of the organised activities – a jungle walk to a waterfall, a trip to feed the monkeys at the temple, a Thai cooking class – or just find a spot under a tree with a book. Sunday is the cultural day, when the whole group heads to see the only English-speaking monk in the province for a talk and guided meditation.
The training is proper Muay Thai, taught the traditional way by trainers who have spent their lives in the sport. Head coach Game has over 200 fights to his name, and the sessions combine shadow boxing, bag work, pad work and HIIT circuits, all in three-minute rounds with active recovery. You don't need any experience – the trainers are used to teaching complete beginners and will work at your pace. If you do have experience and want to compete, they'll happily prepare you for one of the local carnival fights, with the whole camp turning out to cheer you on.
Owner Noi runs the camp with her family, and it's her hospitality background that makes the difference. She's worked in some of Bangkok's top hotels, and it shows in how smoothly everything runs – from the airport pickups to the cooking classes to the way dietary needs are handled. The yoga teacher Laura is a Scot with 20 years on the mat, and she adapts her classes to whoever's in the room, whether that's a total beginner or someone who's been practising for years.
The retreat is based in two locations: the farm lodgings at Kaewma Farm, where the yoga shala and Noi's Cafe are, and the newer Wijittra Resort just a few minutes' walk away, which has the pool, the smoothie bar and the main gym. Whichever you choose, everything is within easy reach, and the free shuttle runs between the two throughout the day.
