Wellness and Yoga Escape in the Japanese Countryside

Wellness and Yoga Escape in the Japanese Countryside

Japan · 4 days · From USD 646

The retreat's philosophy is rooted in the belief that true health is achieved through a balanced combination of mindful movement, mental calm, and a wholesome diet. Each day is thoughtfully structured to weave these elements together, beginning with meditation and yoga to greet the morning, followed by nourishing meals, hands-on learning, and restorative onsen baths. The program is flexible and welcoming, designed to accommodate all levels and abilities.

A highlight of the retreat is the practice of Rakkenho, a unique form of bodywork developed in the 1960s by the monk Yugen Yamanouchi. Practiced in pairs, this 'yoga for two' uses the feet to stimulate acupressure points, improve posture, and enhance circulation. It's an energizing and bonding experience that leaves both giver and receiver feeling renewed. You will learn this technique in daily sessions, gaining skills you can share with loved ones at home.

Food is a central part of the experience, with all meals showcasing the depth and richness of Japanese fermented cuisine. You'll enjoy miso, soy sauce, koji, and umeboshi, all known for their gut-health benefits and profound flavors. A dedicated fermentation workshop teaches you to make koji, a traditional starter used in many Japanese dishes, giving you practical knowledge to continue your wellness journey after the retreat.

The location in Uda, Nara, is a peaceful haven surrounded by mountains and farmland. The retreat house, Yogetsu, is a traditional Japanese dwelling with tatami mats, shoji doors, and futon bedding, offering a genuine cultural immersion. The surrounding area offers opportunities for gentle nature walks, and you'll also have the chance to explore nearby Edo-period towns and ancient temples, enriching your understanding of Japan's spiritual and cultural heritage.
