Wellness Hiking Retreat with Rescue Dogs in the Serra da Estrela, Portugal

Star Mountain animal sanctuary sits on the edge of the historic village of Melo, within the Serra da Estrela Natural Park, a designated national park known for its dramatic peaks, glacial valleys, and traditional stone villages. The sanctuary cares for up to 26 rescue dogs, several of which are happy to accompany guests on hikes.

The retreat is structured around daily walks that range from three to six hours, including travel time to and from the trailhead. Your hosts, Annie and Adam, know the area well and lead routes that mix mountain paths, forest tracks, and visits to local villages and viewpoints. The hiking is moderate, with some elevation, and a reasonable level of fitness is recommended.

A key feature of this retreat is its purpose: instead of a typical holiday fee, guests make a donation of €295 to the sanctuary, which goes directly to supporting the animals. This means your stay has a tangible, positive impact on the lives of the rescue dogs and other animals in their care.

Annie is a Reiki master and experienced yoga teacher, and while this retreat is centered on hiking and time with animals, she brings a gentle, healing presence to the experience. The atmosphere is relaxed and informal, with plenty of opportunities to talk, rest, or explore the surrounding countryside.

Accommodation is provided in a private room in a guesthouse located 800 meters from the sanctuary. The house is comfortable and warm, with a garden, terrace, and library, offering a peaceful base after a day outdoors.
