Home › Retreats › Women's Wellness, Yoga & Hot Springs Weekend in the Colorado Rockies
Colorado · 3 days · From USD 302
The retreat takes place at Joyful Journey Hot Springs Spa, a long-running hot springs property at the northern edge of the San Luis Valley. The venue’s mineral pools sit right against the Sangre de Cristo range, and the water is known for being dense in minerals — guests spend a good part of each day soaking, often under the stars. Accommodations range from standalone yurts to lodge rooms, all a short walk from the pools.
Sue Van Raes, the host, is the author of Food and Freedom and has spent more than two decades as a functional nutritionist and food psychology specialist. She blends biochemistry, psychology, and what she calls soul-level insight into her workshops, which focus on changing how women relate to food, their bodies, and themselves. Her approach is practical and science-based, but the weekend also carries a strong emotional and spiritual thread — many past guests talk about feeling safe to be vulnerable and leaving with new friendships.
The schedule balances structured time with room to breathe. Mornings start with yoga and meditation, then a hearty organic breakfast. Midday brings a hike or a workshop, followed by lunch and free time for soaking. Evenings include another yoga or meditation session, dinner, and often more pool time. One or two afternoons are set aside for the workshops, which are the core of the retreat and where Sue’s teaching shines.
The reviews from previous attendees highlight the warmth of the group, the quality of the teaching, and the transformative effect of the combination of discussion, movement, and rest. One new mother described it as her first time away from her baby and called it 'the exact renewal I needed.' Another guest said she came away 'more balanced and thoughtful.' The retreat is small enough that you’ll know everyone’s name by the second day.
The location itself is a big part of the draw. The San Luis Valley is one of Colorado’s least-known but most scenic regions, with high desert plains, broad skies, and the mountains right there. The retreat center is about a 10-minute drive from the town of Moffat, and the nearest airports are in Alamosa, Colorado Springs, Denver, or Santa Fe — you’ll need a rental car to get there. Once you arrive, you won’t need to leave the property.
