Women's Horse-Assisted Wellness & Yoga Retreat in Cumbria, UK

United Kingdom · 4 days · From EUR 463

Days here start slow. There's yoga before breakfast, usually in a converted barn or out on the grass if the weather's holding, followed by a cooked breakfast. Mid-morning is horse time — you'll walk down to the field, and the facilitators (the team is confirmed before your stay) will set up a session. Sometimes that's simply being near the herd and noticing what comes up. Other times it's leading a horse through an obstacle, or standing with one and working out why you can't get it to move. Nobody rides unless it's specifically arranged, and you don't need any horse experience at all. The afternoons shift outdoors: foraging walks into the ancient woodland around Silverdale and the coast, where you'll pick what ends up in that evening's meal, plus longer coastal walks with the mountains behind you. Late afternoon is usually quieter — journaling, one-to-one time with a facilitator, or rest. Evening circles happen most nights, often outdoors, and involve shadow work and embodiment practices as a group, sometimes with music. It's not compulsory to speak.

The setting does a lot of the work. Carnforth sits between the Lake District and Morecambe Bay, so you get old woodland, tidal flats and mountain-backed beaches within a short drive. The retreat is based at Sunnycote on Silverdale Road, a house with a garden and easy access to the fields where the horses live.

What separates this from a standard yoga-and-horses weekend is the structure of the inner work. Shadow work and embodiment practices are timetabled, not optional extras, and they're run by people who do this regularly. There's also a resident GP offering a functional medical assessment as an optional upgrade — bloods, lifestyle review, a proper sit-down — which is unusual on a retreat of this size and genuinely useful if you've been feeling off and want someone to look at the whole picture rather than one symptom.

Katherine leads the cooking and much of the hosting. She's the barefoot one you'll see in the kitchen and out foraging. Meals are organic and largely foraged, eaten together at a long table. Expect whole foods, fermented things, plenty of vegetables and herbs picked that morning, and no alcohol focus — this isn't a party retreat.

The group size is small, and the tone is gentle but not vague. You'll be asked real questions. That said, the retreat is explicit that it isn't equipped to support serious mental health conditions such as bipolar disorder or complex PTSD, and they ask prospective guests to discuss any concerns with the provider before booking. If you're in a stable place and want to look at patterns that keep repeating, this is well suited. If you're in crisis, it isn't the right container.
