Home › Retreats › Yoga and Art Retreat in Greece: A Creative Wellness Escape on Hydra Island
Greece · 8 days · From USD 1350
Life on Hydra moves at the pace of a walk. The island banned cars decades ago, which means you'll get anywhere on foot—including the 15-minute uphill walk from the port to Oikonomou House, where this retreat is based. The house itself is an old mansion with a ballroom, two terraces, a library, and a large garden. Yoga is taught in the ballroom or on the terraces; art classes happen in the garden when the weather's good, or inside if it's not.
Each morning, Skyrah leads an hour of gentle Hatha or mild vinyasa flow, finishing with meditation. She's been practicing since she was young, trained after graduating from acting school, and has taught everyone from beginners to advanced students. Her style is calm and soothing—guests mention her voice. After breakfast, Angelika takes over for a one-and-a-half-hour watercolor and sketchbook workshop. Angelika is a graphic designer who's lived on Hydra for ten years; she sketches the island's seashells, doors, flowers, and houses, and she's exhibited across Europe. She teaches in an enthusiastic, natural way that makes even first-timers feel like they're making real progress.
The nice thing is that you don't have to be any good at art. The sessions are about learning to look and to record what you see. You'll try watercolor, sketching, and later in the week, maybe acrylics and collage. One day you might walk down to the harbor to paint the boats; another evening you might set up on a terrace to catch the sunset. And there are plenty of free hours to swim, wander the island's galleries and museums, or just nap on the beach.
Hydra is famously artistic—it's been a haven for painters and writers for over a century—and being there feels a bit like walking through a painting. The island is quiet, especially in May, June, September, and October, which are the retreat's main seasons. The retreat runs all year, but those months give you mild temperatures and calm seas. With only a handful of guests each week, you'll likely leave having made real friends, as several reviews mention. It's the kind of week that's less about checking boxes and more about slowing down and letting the creativity come back.
