Yoga and Hiking in the White Villages of Andalusia

Yoga and Hiking in the White Villages of Andalusia

Andalusia · 7 days · From EUR 2195

Rachel has been running this retreat in the Sierra de Grazalema for years, and the shape of the week has settled: two practices a day, one long guided hike, two cultural excursions, and a lot of unstructured afternoon time. The morning block runs 8:00–10:00 and mixes meditation, pranayama and asana; the afternoon block runs 4:30–6:30 and follows the same format. On excursion days the schedule shifts to fit the outing — the page says explicitly that the timetable varies with the needs of the group and the day's activities.

The hike from the retreat centre goes to ruins in the area and to a balcony viewpoint where you can see many of the white villages spread out below. It's described as adaptable to all levels. The cultural tours take in two or three of Spain's most famous pueblos blancos — Zahara de la Sierra, perched on a castle-topped crag; El Gastor, known as the Balcony of the Andalusian White Villages and 15 minutes' walk from the centre; and Ronda, sitting above the El Tajo gorge and famously written about by Hemingway and Orson Welles. Expect walking, tapas, wine and olive oil along the way.

The centre itself is a collection of Spanish villas inside the national park, surrounded by mountains and whitewashed villages. Rooms are in Andalusian-style houses, each with a garden, swimming pool, full kitchen and living room, plus AC and wood-burning chimneys. There are five pools across the property and a dedicated yoga studio. Guests have exclusive access to the whole site for the week.

Accommodation comes in single or double occupancy, and in standard or "plus" categories. Some doubles have two twin beds with a shared bathroom; others have one queen bed — you tell Rachel whether you're happy to share a bed. Singles all have one queen bed. The "plus" rooms are larger or more characterful; one of them (Casa Romantica) is a one-bedroom casita with its own dipping pool, patio and garden, suited to a couple.

Getting there is straightforward but worth planning. The centre is at 11687 El Gastor, Cádiz — roughly 45 minutes from Ronda and 1h30 from either Seville or Málaga airport. Most people fly into Málaga by 12:30 on the Sunday and join a shared shuttle (€40 each way with five or more people, or €25 if you're joining the Málaga shuttle from Ronda). You can also take a train or bus to Ronda and be collected there for €80 each way. Arrival from 3pm on the Sunday, departure by 11am the following Saturday. Dinner on the first night is the first thing on the schedule.
