The week runs on a loose daily pattern. Yoga happens first thing, in the open air with the Gulf of Thailand in view. Classes are pitched for mixed levels, so complete beginners and people with a regular practice share the mat. There is also a daily Muay Thai class. It's an introduction to Thailand's national sport rather than fight training, and the coaches work at your pace. Meditation and pranayama sessions are on the daily schedule too, and a few longer yoga workshops go deeper into particular techniques and breathwork.
The retreat opens with a welcome ceremony where you meet the rest of the group and closes with a closing ceremony on the last evening. In between are Hannah Suraya's mindset and self-love workshops. They cover how you talk to yourself and the stories you tell about yourself, drawing on her NLP coaching background. There's also a sound healing session, where you lie down and listen to instruments played around the room.
Two outings get you off the resort. The guided hike follows jungle trails up to John Suwan Viewpoint, one of the best-known lookouts on Koh Tao, with views over Sai Daeng Bay and Shark Island. The private snorkel boat trip takes the group out to reefs around the island, where you'll see coral and tropical fish and sometimes a blacktip reef shark or a turtle.
What makes this different from a typical Thailand yoga retreat is the pairing of yoga with Muay Thai, and the setting. Most Muay Thai in Thailand happens in busy, sweaty gyms. Here you train at a resort with a reef out front, and you can go straight from class into the sea. The resort is away from the main bar strip at Sairee, so evenings are quiet.
Hannah Suraya leads the retreat. She's a UK-born yoga teacher and women's NLP life coach who left a career as a Chartered Accountant to teach. She has taught yoga to thousands of women in Australia and Thailand. She's also a Muay Thai fighter herself, which is why the programme puts the two disciplines side by side.
Free afternoons are part of the plan. The resort has a pool overlooking the sea, a spa right in front of the ocean, a gym, hammocks, and snorkelling straight off the beach. Kayaking and swimming are the obvious things to do nearby. If you want to see more of the island, scooters can be rented through the resort and delivered to you.
