Yoga, Hiking & Strength Week in the Spanish Pyrenees

Yoga, Hiking & Strength Week in the Spanish Pyrenees

Huesca · 7 days · From EUR 1290

The farmhouse sits at 900 metres on the edge of a small village, with unbroken views down the valley. It's been renovated but keeps its original stone walls and oak beams; there are eight bedrooms over two floors, a big kitchen with a long communal table, a lounge with a wood burner, and an outdoor terrace with shade sails where most of the yoga happens. There's also a small plunge pool and a wood-fired sauna that gets lit on two or three evenings.

A typical day looks like this: 7.30am tea and fruit on the terrace, 8am yoga for 75 minutes, 9.30am breakfast (eggs, local yoghurt, bread, fruit, coffee), 10.30am departure for the day's hike with a packed lunch, back by 4pm, 5pm strength or mobility session in the gym for an hour, 7.30pm dinner, and by 9pm most people are on the terrace with a glass of wine or in bed. Wednesdays are free — no classes, no hikes, and the van runs into Aínsa for the market in the morning.

The hiking is the reason a lot of people book. The routes vary — one day it's the Añisclo Canyon with its limestone walls and river crossings, another it's the climb to the Mirador de Revilla for views over the Peña Montañesa, and there's a shorter forest walk along the Río Cinca on the last day so nobody's legs are wrecked for the drive home. Distances run between 8 and 14km with 300–700m of ascent.

The yoga is taught by Marta Elizalde, who has run teacher trainings in Bilbao for a decade and teaches a fairly athletic hatha-vinyasa style — expect long holds, sun salutations that actually raise a sweat, and some breathwork at the end. The strength sessions are run by Iker Solana, a former national-level fell runner who now coaches trail athletes. His sessions are short, unglamorous and effective: goblet squats, single-leg work, carries, core, and a lot of emphasis on downhill legs and ankles because that's what breaks on hiking holidays.

What separates this from the big retreat centres is that it's genuinely small and genuinely rural. There's one village shop, no spa menu, no schedule of add-on treatments. You eat what the kitchen cooks (it's good — a lot of it comes from the garden and the butcher in Aínsa), you walk where the guides walk, and if it rains you do yoga indoors and the hike gets swapped for a lower valley route. The week works well for solo travellers because meals are all at one long table, but it's equally fine for couples or two friends sharing.
