Tanzania · 13 days
The retreat starts at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where Above Safaris staff pick you up and drive you to a hotel in Arusha. That first evening you meet your yoga instructor, your safari guides, and the rest of the group over dinner. Day two is a visit to a rural Maasai village outside Arusha, where you learn about Maasai daily life and their relationship with the land, followed by an afternoon yoga session in the village if the weather allows.
From day three onward you're on safari. You'll spend a day in Tarangire National Park, known for its elephant herds and wide-open savannas. Then it's on to Mto wa Mbu, a town near Lake Manyara, where you can choose a walking or biking tour. The route continues through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area to the Serengeti, where you do a half-day game drive the first afternoon and a full-day game drive the next day, stopping for lunch in the park. There's an option to return to camp early for a restorative yoga session with a view of the plains.
Day seven takes you out of the Serengeti toward Ngorongoro, with a final game drive in the morning and a sunset yoga session at camp. Day eight is the Ngorongoro Crater itself — you drive along the rim, descend 2,000 feet to the crater floor, and spend the morning watching some of Africa's densest populations of large mammals, including rhinos. That afternoon you head back to Arusha. If you're on the 8-day trip, you fly home from Kilimanjaro that evening. If you're on the 13-day trip, you stay overnight in Arusha and fly to Zanzibar the next morning.
The Zanzibar leg is five days at a beach lodge in the north of the island. Yoga and meditation run on the beach before breakfast and again before dinner, and the middle of the day is free — swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, spa treatments, or swimming with dolphins, which you arrange directly with the hotel. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included at the lodge; if you eat elsewhere, that's on you. On day 13 you do a final beach yoga session, take one last swim, and get transferred to the airport.
What separates this from a standard safari is the yoga schedule built around the game drives — early morning sessions before you head out, sunset sessions when you get back — and the fact that the instructor travels with the group the whole time. It's not a yoga retreat with a safari bolted on, or a safari with one token class. The instructor is a 200-hour RYT certified vinyasa teacher. The safari guides are local Tanzanians who work for Above Safaris year-round, and the company hires locally rather than bringing in outside staff.
