Home › Retreats › Yoga & Safari Wellness Escape in Northern Tanzania
Tanzania · 9 days · From USD 3550
Days one to three are spent settling in around Moshi. You arrive at the Amani Light Retreat, take an afternoon yoga class to open the trip, and then head into town the next morning for a market walk and a cooking class at a local home. That's the Chagga cooking day — you make coconut milk by hand, learn the local methods, and eat what you've cooked. Day three is Maasai Day: a grounding morning flow, then a Maasai medicine workshop and nature walk with a guide who explains which plants the tribe uses and for what, finishing with sunset yoga or meditation.
The safari starts early on day four with the drive to Tarangire National Park, which is known for its elephants. You do an afternoon game drive, then transfer toward the Ngorongoro Crater and stay nearby. Day five is a sunrise game drive inside the crater itself — this is the day the Big Five are realistically on the table. Lunch back at the lodge, then a slow afternoon with yoga, meditation and reflection time. Day six is Lake Manyara National Park for one last game drive, then the drive to West Kilimanjaro to start the retreat half of the trip.
The final three days are at the Africa Amini Maasai Lodge. The first is deliberately restful after the safari — up for sunrise over Kilimanjaro, one or two yoga and meditation sessions, and the option to book energy healing or a massage. That evening there's a traditional Maasai dance and a fireside chat with the lodge's Maasai hosts. Day eight follows a similar rhythm, with yoga, meditation and journaling, plus a nature walk led by a Maasai guide and more options for bodywork. Day nine is the closing circle.
What separates this from a standard yoga retreat is that the cultural parts are the point, not a side trip. You meet the Hadzabe, a hunter-gatherer tribe, and learn about their way of life. You learn the traditional healing practices of the Maasai directly from people who use them. The yoga is serious — daily practice, guided by two experienced teachers — but it's woven around the safari and the village days rather than being the whole week.
Jodie Rufty and Marissa Lipovsky lead the programme between them, handling the yoga, meditation and pranayama sessions across the nine days. Both have taught on this trip before, and the schedule leaves enough slack that you're not rushing between a game drive and a class.
