Yoga & Wellness Retreat in the Bahian Atlantic Forest, Brazil

The retreat centre is made up of two houses, Casa Beija Flor and Casa Andorinha, plus a yoga room with polished floors that opens onto tropical gardens. Between the two houses there are four ensuite rooms — two with three single beds each and two with two single beds each — so up to 10 guests in beds, plus two hosts can sleep in the yoga room on single beds. Every guest gets a beach towel and a bath towel, organic soap, a mosquito net and free wifi. There's a kitchen with stoves, coffee makers, filters, mugs, plates, bowls and utensils, and a dining table looking out over the gardens and the ocean. A beach hut on the sand is set up for barbecues, lunch and dinner, and there are hammocks and chill-out spots all over the property.

The sample day on the site runs from 7am beach meditation through to an 8pm bonfire, with two yoga sessions (one energising in the morning, one restorative in the afternoon), a sunset walking meditation on the beach, and a long free block in the middle of the day for forest walks, hammock time or a massage. The yoga room fits up to 13 people and comes with mats and blocks; there's also an aerial yoga platform with silks if your group teaches that. Cleaning is done daily and a retreat centre manager is on site.

The food side can be arranged with the venue, which suggests or assists with chef service covering gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian, ayurvedic and authentic Brazilian cuisine. They can also organise lectures on nutrition and longevity, Ayurvedic, Lomi Lomi and Thai yoga massages, and tours of local organic cocoa farms. Airport transfers can be arranged too — most people fly into Ilhéus Airport via São Paulo or Rio, or into Salvador International and take a six-hour transfer.

What separates this from a hotel with a yoga room is the location. The centre sits in the Mata Atlântica on the Cacao Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage area and one of the world's top five biodiversity hotspots. There's an unspoilt, secluded beach directly in front, the Serra do Conduru State Park nearby for trekking, and wildlife on the property. It's a whole-property hire, so your group has the run of the place.
