Yoga & Zen Meditation Retreat on Serifos

Yoga & Zen Meditation Retreat on Serifos

Greece · 6 days · From USD 800

The retreat is led by a team of experienced teachers, including Alexandra Sotiropoulou, who has taught yoga since 2003 and is certified by Yoga Alliance International at the 500-hour master level. Her classes draw on Ashtanga Vinyasa and Scaravelli-inspired yoga, and she brings a teaching style that balances care with challenge—guests mention feeling supported while also being pushed to improve. Antaratma Theodore Chiotis, a Satyananda Yoga teacher and musician, leads the yoga and kirtan chanting, while Konstantinos Sgoubopoulos, a Soto Zen monk and founder of Zen Center Athens, guides the meditation practice.

The daily schedule includes two yoga classes and two sitting meditation sessions, with pranayama (breathing techniques) integrated into the practice. Mornings start early with a combined yoga and zazen session, followed by breakfast and a review of yoga philosophy. The midday block involves karma yoga, or mindful work, which for this retreat means helping with simple tasks around the property—a core part of Zen practice. Afternoons are largely free, giving you time to swim at a nearby beach, rest, or wander the island, and the evening brings another yoga class, dinner, and a final meditation sitting.

Unlike a typical yoga holiday, this retreat has a strong Zen thread, with a focus on zazen, the practice of 'just sitting.' You'll be introduced to the basics of Zen meditation if you're new to it, and the slower, quieter moments of the day are as much a part of the experience as the physical practice. The setting supports this—Kaisanji is peaceful, surrounded by nature, and far from the main tourist areas of the island.

The food is a highlight. Chef Esco Essence, a Finnish raw food artist and founder of The Plant Kingdom, prepares all meals vegan, using fresh seasonal vegetables and simple plant-based recipes that emphasize nutrition and detoxification. The cooking is straightforward but flavorful, with herbs and spices used thoughtfully. Guests have praised the quality of the meals, and the cook is happy to share nutritional information and accommodate dietary needs—just let them know in advance.
