Active Surf Week in Wild Brittany: Audierne Bay Surf Camp near the Pointe du Raz

Brittany · 7 days · From EUR 600

The core of the week is the surf lesson. Sessions usually run Monday to Friday, last about two hours, and are taught in French or English. Lesson times move with the tide, so one day you might be in the water mid-morning and the next in the late afternoon. Every lesson covers some theory as well as practice: how the spots work, how tides and swell change them, ocean safety, and how to share the water with other surfers. The school's stated aim is to make you independent, so by the end of the week you can choose a spot and paddle out safely on your own.

What sets this camp apart from a typical surf week is the coastline. Audierne Bay runs from the Pointe du Raz and the Baie des Trépassés down to Penmarc'h and the Pointe de la Torche. Along that stretch you'll find reef breaks, beach breaks and point breaks, plus several sheltered spots that work when the swell gets big. The instructors pick the spot each day based on conditions and on who is in the group, so you're rarely surfing somewhere that's beyond you. The water is cold Atlantic water, so you'll be in a wetsuit, but it's also clear and quiet.

The school was founded by Julien Jallet. He has surfed for more than 30 years and taught for more than 20, and holds both the French Surfing Federation (FFS) certification and the BNSSA lifeguard qualification. Before settling in Brittany he travelled widely and taught in other parts of France, including the Landes. His team are state-qualified instructors registered with the DDCS, with professional cards and insurance covering accidents during lessons. Safety comes first in every session, and the teaching style leans heavily on learning by doing.

The house is Soul Surfin' House, a recently renovated property that sleeps 10 in 4 bedrooms with 3 bathrooms. It is 140 metres from the ocean and 600 metres from the nearest lifeguarded beach. On the walls hang large prints of Breton and international surf spots by photographer Jérome Chobeaux. With a sea view from every window, you can check the waves from bed before deciding where to go.

On your free afternoons and evenings, walk sections of the GR 34 along the cliffs, drive out to the Pointe du Raz, or explore the harbour town of Audierne. If you want extra time in the water, the school rents surfboards, bodyboards, wetsuits and fins by the hour, half day, day or week. Because it's a group house, the evenings tend to be shared: cooking, comparing waves and planning the next day's spot.

The camp suits adults, children, solo travellers, friends and families. In some weeks it adds a second focus such as Pilates or yoga. The specific camp packages and their prices aren't listed on the page, so check with the school which format runs on your dates.
