Amalfi Coast · 7 days · From USD 4000
A typical day starts early on the villa terrace with a short meditation and some easy movement – stretching, yoga-based flows, nothing punishing. Breakfast follows, and then you head out. The van or boat is arranged for you; you don't need to figure out the buses or ferries that make getting around this coast hard work for independent travellers.
The big days are the outdoor ones. The Path of the Gods is the famous cliff-top trail between Agerola and Nocelle above Positano – a few hours on foot with the sea hundreds of metres below. There are two private boat days: one cruising the Amalfi coastline with swimming stops and time ashore in Amalfi, and a full day out to Capri, running along the island's cliffs before docking so you can explore, shop and eat. Later in the week there's a sunset kayak along the coast at Sorrento. In between, you get free time in town – two of the week's lunches are left open so you can pick your own spot.
What sets this apart from a typical yoga retreat is the balance. The movement is light and the sightseeing is heavy. You're not doing two long classes a day; you're doing one gentle morning session and then walking, swimming and paddling your way around one of the most visited coastlines in Europe. If you want a drilled-in practice, this isn't it. If you want to actually see the Amalfi Coast and feel good while doing it, it fits well.
The trip is hosted by two people. Nikki Strong is a dietitian, personal trainer and yoga instructor-in-training who has led retreats in places like Costa Rica and Bali; she runs the morning sessions and sets the pace of the week. Natalie Muth is a professional soccer player who has lived and played abroad for years and founded Lost & Hungry, a company that runs adventure-focused group trips. She has spent a lot of time in Italy and planned the route, the boat days and the restaurants.
The setting does a lot of the work. You're on a stretch of coast where villages are stacked up the cliffs in pastel colours, lemons grow on terraces, and nearly every lunch table comes with a sea view. Coming back to a private villa at the end of each day – rather than a busy hotel in Positano – means you get a quiet pool and your own view once the day-trippers have gone home.
