Phuket Fight-Fitness Camp: Muay Thai, MMA and Beach Bootcamps in Chalong

Thailand · 7 days

A typical day starts with morning Muay Thai. You join the class for your level and spend about two hours on pad rounds, technique drills, clinch work and conditioning. The professional ring class is invite-only, so beginners aren't thrown in with fighters. Most people rest, eat and sleep over the middle of the day. In the afternoon there's a second Muay Thai session, or you swap it for MMA, BJJ, boxing, or the harder conditioning classes: CrossTraining, GRiND, Combat Conditioning and HardCORE.

The size of the place is what sets it apart from a small Thai camp. Pro fighters live and train here. UFC champions Valentina Shevchenko and Alexander Volkanovski have trained with the team, and the camp's news feed lists results from ONE Championship, RISE and Rizin. You'll probably see people preparing for real fights on the next mat while you learn to throw a teep. Because so many classes run at once, you can do striking in the morning and grappling in the afternoon without reorganising your day.

The MMA and BJJ side covers stand-up, wrestling and ground work, with MMA and BJJ classes daily. Joseph Henle is co-head MMA coach and head BJJ coach. He's a professional MMA fighter and a BJJ black belt under former world champion Fabio Leopoldo. The camp says a new head MMA coach is about to be announced.

If you're there mainly to get fitter or lose weight, there's plenty without sparring. BodyFit bootcamps run on the sand and in the hills. The indoor weight room is air-conditioned and fully equipped. Peter 'The Thai Hulk' runs it: he has competed on the Asian bodybuilding circuit and writes nutrition plans for guests. There's also a weekly yoga class and HYROX365 sessions.

The camp is in Chalong, in the south of Phuket, close to beaches like Nai Harn. You can get a swim in between sessions, and the Big Buddha is close enough to use as a training hill. Tiger Muay Thai also has a second camp in Chiang Mai and affiliate gyms in Bali, Singapore, the Philippines and the Gold Coast. The Phuket camp is the original.
