Tuscany Camp sits at San Rocco a Pilli, in the comune of Sovicille just outside Siena. The setting is the Tuscan countryside — quiet, and used as a base by both young athletes and established middle-distance and long-distance runners. The camp describes its location as quiet but strategic, which in practice means you can train without city noise and still be close to Siena.
The coaching connection is the thing that separates this camp from a generic running holiday. Giuseppe Giambrone, coach of the Ugandan Athletics Team's middle-distance and long-distance sector, is behind the Uganda Camp project that Tuscany Camp supports. The camp's own account of how it started is specific: in January 2014 he flew to Kenya and Uganda, rented a car in Nairobi, and met the staff of the Ugandan National Athletics Federation — including Flavio Pascalato, an Italian who has lived in Uganda for around 20 years, and his wife, the Federation's Secretary General. That meeting led to the partnership.
The Uganda side now runs at Bukwo, on Mount Elgon, and at Kapchorwa, where a second camp opened in 2022. Flavio Pascalato founded the camp and still manages it. Tuscany Camp supports it financially and technically, and the Ugandan athletes get a specialised coach on the spot, a cook, and free food and accommodation. Part of the project's stated aim is teaching athletes to manage their own finances and build businesses at home once their running career ends, and raising families' awareness of girls' education and of running as a proper job.
On the Italian side, the camp lists accommodation, food, healthcare, physiotherapy and technique among what it can offer. It also brings groups of athletes, amateurs included, with their families, to discover the Ugandan training locations — the camp calls this increasing sports tourism.
