Home › Retreats › Ayurveda & Yoga Wellness Escape in Kathmandu Valley, Nepal
Kathmandu · 4 days · From USD 220
What makes this retreat different from a simple yoga holiday is the Ayurvedic layer. The retreat is run on the side of Kathmandu city at the edge of Nagarjun Jungle, away from the traffic and pollution of central Kathmandu. After you arrive, a consultation with the resident Ayurveda doctor determines your dosha – Vata, Pitta, or Kapha – and pinpoints any current health complaints. Based on that, you receive a daily regime of traditional massages and therapies. Guests commonly mention Shirodhara (warm oil poured over the forehead), Chakra vasti (a warm oil pool treatment on the abdomen), and Svedana (herbal steam). The spa here is simple but effective, and the therapists are experienced. The yoga and meditation sessions are woven around the treatments. Instructors Ram and Tirtha lead daily asana classes in Hatha, Ashtanga, and Vinyasa styles, and include pranayama, meditation, and mantra chanting. You don't need any prior yoga experience – the group is small and the teaching is adapted to whatever level you arrive with. The food is another highlight. All meals are vegetarian or vegan, made with fresh, seasonal produce, and the kitchen adjusts dishes to suit each guest's dosha and the doctor's advice. Expect rice, dal, seasonal vegetables, salad, beans, chickpeas, bread, and fruit, with herbs and spices that balance digestion. The property itself is a family-run affair with two buildings – an older building with more basic rooms and a newer one that feels cleaner and more modern, with air conditioning. There is a yoga shala (deck) for classes, a spa room for treatments, and green space around the buildings where you can watch monkeys from the nearby jungle if you're lucky.
