Phitsanulok is a riverside city in lower Northern Thailand, built along the Nan River about 380 km north of Bangkok. Flights from Bangkok take around an hour to Phitsanulok Airport (PHS), close to the city centre, and the city is also on the Northern railway line and served by long-distance buses.
Its best-known landmark is Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat (Wat Yai), home of the Phra Phuttha Chinnarat, one of the most revered Buddha images in Thailand. Phitsanulok is also the birthplace of King Naresuan the Great, remembered at the Chan Palace shrine.
Few foreign tourists come here, and that is the appeal for people who travel to train: everyday Thai life rather than a tourist strip, lower day-to-day costs than Bangkok or the islands, and small family-run Muay Thai camps where guests get personal coaching.
